America is regarded as a melting pot due to the various groups of immigrants with different cultures abandoning their own cultures and becoming assimilated into the predominant society. Individuals with different cultural backgrounds undergo assimilation to form a society of common culture. Although individuals abandon their cultures, some differences exist among the homogenous society formed (Marger, 2014). Intergroup conflicts are inevitable in multiethnic societies; individuals have two ways of forming a multiethnic society: separation and integration. The paths groups follow to form a multiethnic society may also be called assimilation and pluralism.
